The Twilight Saga. Let’s face it: you either love it or loathe it. Or do you?
To be honest, I’m a little in between. I don’t despise it – I actually find the books pretty good – but I’m not wholly convinced by the films.
I guess the story is pretty good (although not that original) and there’s always something hot about a vampire vs. werewolf showdown. However, it is quite possible that the whole franchise is a little over-hyped. To be honest, I think it lacks the imagination of the Harry Potter scene, so if you ask me then no, Twilight isn’t the new Potter.
When I went to see New Moon this week, I wasn’t expecting much. In my opinion, the best thing about the movie is a little gem they call Dakota Fanning. At only fifteen years old, this little star is nothing short of an acting genius. She has minimal screentime in New Moon, but remains to be the best thing about it.
Why? Because Fanning portrays the innocent yet vicious vampire Jane with such vigour and perfection that she gives movie veteran Meryl Streep a run for her money. The smile she gives is utterly chilling – like looking at the face of Adolf Hitler on a child. Spine-tingling.
Otherwise, the film ran on a little long. In this movie, we see Edward leave Bella, Bella becoming depressed, Bella making a friend in Jacob who wants to be more than friends with Bella and far too much confusion for the Twilight fan who has never actually read any of the books. My friends didn’t really have a clue what was happening when we went, but we did all agree that the best scene was one of those filmed in Italy.
The Cullens and Bella head to Volterra to meet with the vampire equivalent to royalty, the Volturi. (Did that sentence totally rhyme, or was it just me?) It sounds complicated, but there is an awesome fight scene within it with clever acting from Michael Sheen.
On the whole, the film is pretty much just eye candy for the average teenage girl. It’s too long, but the acting in particular is much better than that in the first movie.
