Welcome to Music Monday, the first of what will become a weekly blog on TheDailyWiggle.com!
I, Voice, have quite a large CD collection. It is known by many of my friends that if they want an album, chances are I’ll have it or will be able to get it.
So every week I thought it’d be cool to review some CDs – some old, some new – and possibly help you decide which albums to buy and which aren’t worthy of purchase.
To kick things off, I’m gonna go all retro and take you back to 1971: a year when The Beatles and The Bee Gees were still topping the charts. We begin with a stunning lyrical and musical album from 70s favourite Joni Mitchell, who’s music still lives on today.
I’ll take you through, track by track. (Which I will do every week, by the way.)
Track #1: All I Want – A positively catchy opening tune, showcasing Mitchell’s guitar expertise to perfection.
Track #2: My Old Man – Again, very catchy. This track shows another side of Joni’s voice, with a range of high notes being the main feature.
Track #3: Little Green - Not the strongest track on the album, but pleasing enough to the ear.
Track #4: Carey – The first up-tempo song on the album. This one has a fantastic chorus, which sees Joni backed up by a chorus of… herself. Literally.
Track #5: Blue – If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll have realized this is also name of the album. One of the weaker tracks, yet it’s still a good song. Says it all really.
Track #6: California – Possibly one of the most well-known songs from Joni. Only listen to it if you want to have it stuck in your head for the best part of a week. Amazing backing guitar and chorus.
Track #7: This Flight Tonight – You probably won’t remember the title of this one once you’ve listened to it, but you’ll definitely remember the song. Another track that brings out the different tones in Mitchell’s voice.
Track #8: River – Without a doubt my favourite song on the CD. It’s sort of Christmassy and I love it. Great lyrics, great piano accompaniment. Beautiful to listen to.
Track #9: A Case of You - Sounds positive with its upbeat rhythms, but has a really sad story behind it’s lyrics. This track is amongst my favourites too; the lyrics clinch it for me.
Track #10: The Last Time I Saw Richard – Another great track. Starts with a gorgeous solo from Joni on the ivories. Simply outstanding.
To Buy or Not to Buy?
Quite obviously, I have to say BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT!!!!!
It’s retro sounding and lovely. Joni Mitchell is probably one of the best all-rounders I can think of. Each of her songs tell a story and I like that in an album.
