Okay, Music Monday will be undergoing a slight change as from this week.
Instead of reviewing full albums from one band, I’m going to start reviewing 5 individual songs a week, sometimes with a few more details about the band in question.
And how will I decide? Obviously, I will be using the iTunes random shuffle technique. I’ll put my iTunes on shuffle and review whichever tracks come up first. No matter what track it is (unless I’ve reviewed it previously), I will write about it.
If you have any qualms about this new method, let me know and it shall be abolished for evermore.
Here goes…
Song #1: Crazy On You – Heart: Originally released way back in 1976, this track is possibly one of Heart’s most well known. I’m
sure this band really don’t need a huge introduction because they’re so legendary, but I’ll tell you that it’s led by sisters Ann & Nancy Wilson from Seattle, Washington.
This guitar has a crazy guitar to go alongside it, which kicks off the track and remains upbeat and perfect throughout. This is possibly one of my favourite Heart tracks of all time, which says a lot because Heart have a staggering 12 full length albums to their name. I told you, they’re legendary. You should totally buy this track too. (Click HERE to buy in the UK, or HERE to buy in the US.)
Song #2: In The Sun – Joseph Arthur: I don’t actually know much about Joseph, other than that this song appeared on The L
Word and that it was also covered by Chris Martin of Coldplay. Wikipedia however, fills my brain with useless knowledge about the guy with things such as the fact that he is from Ohio and was once a drug addict. I’m guessing the 2 things don’t exclusively match. (As in, I’m guessing not everyone from Ohio is a drug addict…)
ANYWAY, this track is actually great. It can get slightly repetitive after the first four minutes, but in general, it’s a beautiful song. The lyrics are easy to learn to, and they’re really quite profound in that they send across a message to its listener. Big love to the track. Click HERE to listen for free.
Song #3: Killing In The Name – Rage Against The Machine: I had so much more love for this song before it was Christmas
number 1 in the UK in 2009. After then, it was overplayed and the sent the wrong message to fans about its origins and its legacy. I actually had the album a couple of years before it was re-released but whatever. Fair play to the band for making extra money.
I guess the song is pretty good, but it’s specifically only for rockers or, nowadays, for wannabes. I’m guessing that most of the fans of this song aren’t into heavy metal in the slightest but are more fans of what the Christmas number 1 did to it. It’s not something I’d choose to listen to anyway. I’m much more into their song ‘Bombtrack’ off the same album. Buy their album HERE (UK) or HERE (US).
Song #4: Stay Cold – Gallows: Now here is some proper modern day metal/screamo. This band aren’t known for any gimmicky
number ones or repetitive, obvious-sounding guitars, they’re known for being brutally angry and often naked. Yep, it’s true. The Gallows lead singer Frank Carter is often topless, baring his tattooed body for the whole room to see. Being from England myself, I know that these lads are from Watford. And they’re pretty amazing.
I’ve never been to one of their gigs, but this song goes to show that if you do go, you’re probably prone to an injury or two. Today’s screamo fans are usually so caught up in crazy slam dance that they let go completely. I like this track, because it’s shocking and it definitely doesn’t get boring. 1-0 to the UK, I’d say. Listen to it HERE for free.
Song #5: It Feels Like I’m In Love – Kelly Marie: This chick is actually 52 now. That’s the same age as my Mum. And GOD she’s a
whole lot cooler. Mostly because of this feel good disco track. I’m pretty sure this was actually a song ready for play on one of those arcade dance machines you get and it’s easy to see why.
This song was also actually a UK number 1 in 1980, and it took the top spot from The Jam and was defeated after 1 week at the top by The Police. Obviously Kelly was doing something right, or she wouldn’t have been seen alongside those two titan British punk bands, would she? If you’re feeling super perky and just want a little classic disco to dance to, I recommend it. Buy it HERE in the US, or HERE in the UK.
