Kate Nash. Rhymes with mash, flash and ‘tache.
In case you didn’t already know.
I’m not sure that Kate really needs any introduction, especially to those of you living in the UK. Ms. Nash had smash hit singles in Britain with ‘Foundations’, ‘Mouthwash’ and the delightful ‘Pumpkin Soup’.
Let’s see if her album matches up to her single releases.
Track #1: Play – A lot of people said they didn’t like this song, but I liked it. I have no idea why, it’s just really bass-y and poppy to introduce the rest of the playlist.
Track #2: Foundations – Anyone who says they don’t like this song is lying. I’m surprised it only got to number 2, to be honest. It’s great.
Track #3: Mouthwash – Nash’s second single. I actually prefer this to ‘Foundations’. Most people disagree, but I just love this one. And I love the music video that goes along with it.
Track #4: Dickhead – This is one of 2 tracks I can play on guitar. But any arsehole could play this one. I suppose this is one of the weaker songs, but everyone has some dickhead they’d love to sing this song to.
Track #5: Birds – I think this is my least favourite. I used to love it for it’s lyrics, but I’m over it. I suppose the chorus is quite good, but I wouldn’t choose to listen to this one.
Track #6: We Get On – The anecdotal story-telling quality to Nash’s songs is pretty great. And this is no exception. Cute, poppy fun.
Track #7: Mariella – I love how this song starts drearily slow and moulds into a super fast tempo. Not sure where Kate got the inspiration for this, but it’s good anyway.
Track #8: Shit Song – I wasn’t actually a big fan of this song until after I saw Nash play live. But then I realized how much I’d love to sing it to various people. “Darlin’, don’t give me shit, ’cause I know that you’re full of it.”
Track #9: Pumpkin Soup – The video to this song is almost as great as the song itself. It’s super cute. And the song once again tells a story.
Track #10: Skeleton Song – One of the songs that could do with ending a bit sooner. However, it’s really quirky and random and also ends up with Kate freaking out and smashing her skeleton. Told you it was quirky.
Track #11: Nicest Thing – The slowest song on the album and possibly the sweetest. This song probably has the best lyrics of the lot and has a gorgeous violin in the background. (This is the other song I can play on the guitar, by the way.)
Track #12: Merry Happy/Little Red – Two songs in one! Not sure why Kate chose to combine them, but it works anyway. Both fun songs. The first about dancing at discos and eating cheese on toast, the second about some random-ness. I’m sure ‘Little Red’ is either Kate’s nickname or a reference to Little Red Riding Hood. It has a pretty piano anyway.
As a whole, this isn’t a bad album. I’m not surprised at all that it achieved a number 1 in the UK.
And to all of those who say she is just ‘a rip off of Lily Allen’, Lily actually introduced Kate to her record label and supported her music. Plus, she’s not as likely to be seen off her face in the streets of London as Lily.
