Wahoo! Week 2 of the new layout.

Seems no one commented saying they hated it last week, but that might just be because no one actually read the article.

So for now, we’ll stick with it.

Song #1: Just Like Heaven – The Cure: As you can probably see, my iTunes is filled with a lot of vintage. This particular type of vintage comes from 1987 and it is possibly one of my favourite Cure songs of all time. Not to everyone’s taste, because some people class them as weird, gothic rock, but I think this song is a masterpiece.

Sometimes simplicity makes a song more complex than it would have been if it were filled with jazz bands and harps and banging drums, and this song is the perfect example to this analogy. Simple beats, simple guitar and simple yet beautiful lyrics, ‘Just Like Heaven’ will be stuck in your head and definitely leave you with something to think about. Song #2: Patterns – Band of Skulls: Moving on from the 80s and right into now. This band only very recently formed in 2008, and already have a series of celebrity fans including BBC Radio 1’s Fearne Cotton. Their music has also been used in various media forms; the most notable perhaps being the inclusion of their song ‘Friends’ on the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack.

This tune is one that is actually unreleased as yet from the bands’ debut album ‘Baby Darling Doll Face Honey’ and it’s a pretty good one. Made up of 2 guys and 1 girl, it’s actually the girl, Emma Richardson, that takes lead vocals here. I really like the lyrics to this song actually, they make a statement but in a cool, modern, indie way. Click HERE to buy the single in the US or HERE in the UK. I strongly recommend it.

Song #3: Feels Like Home – Chantal Kreviazuk: I actually first heard this song on the soundtrack of the 2003 Kate Hudson flop ‘How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days’. (Which I actualy enjoyed immensely, by the way.) Anyway, the movie might have been a sucker in terms of box office sales, but the soundtrack was definitely a winner.

The song by Chantal is actually a cover of a Randy Newman original, which you might have heard recently on various TV commercials. Not sure which I prefer, but Kreviazuk sure makes a great attempt to match Newman’s efforts. Gorgeous lyrics alongside a simple piano, which creates the winning combination for a simple yet powerful ballad. Click HERE to buy the single in the UK or click HERE for the US.

Song #4: Black Gloves – Goose: This song is actually the only track I’ve heard by the Belgian electro rock band, and I’ve onlyheard it because I purchased the soundtrack to Drew Barrymore’s new film ‘Whip It!’ this month. Apparently they started out covering bands from classic rock groups such as AC/DC, but now they couldn’t be further from their roots.

This track is absolutely a pure electronic, dance anthem. It actually wouldn’t be out of place on an episode of Skins, and it’s definitely something you’d want to play at a party you have to keep your guests happy. If you don’t have time for a party, I recommend this track wholly for you to listen to on your own through your earphones. Just make sure you turn it up full blast to get that mind-boggling buzz in your ears. Click HERE for the US download or HERE for the UK.

Song #5: The Con – Tegan & Sara: If you’ve not heard of Tegan & Sara by now, you’ve pretty much been hiding under a rock. These Canadian twins are actually now on their 6th album, although they look barely old enough to be drinking alcohol. Their music has been featured on many top television shows, including Grey’s Anatomy, The L Word, Vampire Diaries and The Hills. So they must be good, right?

Personally, ‘The Con’ is my favourite Tegan & Sara album, and the title track is possibly one of the strongest of the bunch. Perfect lyrics, a gorgeous electric guitar and a new style electro feel is introduced particularly in this song. I don’t just recommend this track, but the whole album. It really is worth the money and each song brings something different. Click HERE (UK) or HERE (US).

Top Track This Week: Black Gloves – Goose.
