I’ve always been fascinated with Italy. And now I’ve seen new musical ‘Nine’, I’m even more infatuated with it.
A lot of people said that they thought it sucked – both friends and critics – but I seriously found it enthralling and exciting.
I suppose I’m a bit strange when it comes to reviewing movies. I look for things that perhaps others wouldn’t when watching. I’m a big fan of lighting – watching how the director has chosen to light each scene, each face, each set… it’s very important for me.
One thing that stood out in this movie was the setting. I’m not sure if it was actually filmed in Italy or not, which is pretty amazing. If it wasn’t filmed in Italy, the set designers did a freakin’ amazing job: I actually felt as though I had been taken on a plane trip to Rome. It was extremely beautiful.
Casting was obviously impressive too. All the big names (Daniel Day Lewis, Sophia Loren, Judy Dench) were included in the cast list. A surprisingly convincing performance came from America’s sweetheart, Kate Hudson. Who knew that she could actually sing?!
A lesser known name whilst placed alongside Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and Fergie was Marion Cotillard, who played the wrongly done wife to perfection. Some of the best acting came from Cotillard – her characters’ emotions read all over her face and her voice was both sweet and strong, depending on what was needed. She stole the show for me.
Basically, I don’t know what the negative comments were all about. It is obvious a lot of work went into making this flawless motion picture.
The movie, overall, makes you laugh, it moves you, it makes you think and most of all, it makes you want to be Italian.
